The museum was originally established in 1956 under the name “Exhibition of the History of Ulaanbaatar City.” The exhibition was opened on July 9, 1956, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the head of the Ulaanbaatar City Administration, Lamjav, and the participation of the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Mongolian People’s Party, Damba. At the time of its establishment, the museum was headed by Ragsaasuren, and the staff included two people: Ragsaasuren and Dash.
By the 106th decree of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) on April 11, 1960, the “History of the City Exhibition” was expanded and reorganized into the “Museum of the History and Reconstruction of Ulaanbaatar City.”
To strengthen the museum’s reputation and position in society, a proposal to change the name of the museum was communicated to the relevant authorities. As a result, the name of the museum was changed to “Ulaanbaatar City Museum” by the 157th decree of the Ulaanbaatar City People’s Representatives Council Presidium in 2011.
The museum’s organizational structure includes a director, a records and database manager, an internal affairs specialist, a research worker and guide, a collections manager, an organizer, an accountant, a cleaner, and four attendants, with a total of 12 positions.
